DX Commander SOTA Tactical Travel EXPEDITION Antenna System

Multi-Band Expedition System based on the Expedition / SOTA / Portable Travel pole and 3-wire elements to give you any number of bands you wish.

May I just say that this is SO quick to build and erect, I wish I’d launched this earlier. I’m so pleased!

So I have just built myself one for 40m, 20m, 17m and 15m. Dimensions of the wire was 11.30m for 40m (and 15m band). That “top-loads” the 15m band, making almost a 5/8th wave. 20m was 5.02m however, I folded over 20cms of that to give me some space between the top of the wire and the top spreader so the shock cord could do its work and 17m band ended up being a total length of 3.82m and I used a 6cm foldback, so the 3.82m includes the length required to make a loop at the top of the wire. I then used shock-cord between the top of the element and the upper spreader, I didn’t bother with any paracord. All bands ended up at 1.1:1 SWR. I used 80m of radials with 6 radials per connector so that makes 5 x 6 (30) radials at 2.6m long each. Total length of around 80m of wire. So, 2 wavelengths at 40m and 4 wavelengths at 20m. Ideal.

1.1:1 SWR  was achieved between these frequencies and the whole band for each freq was below 1.3:1.

From To (Mhz)
7.00 7.42
14.03 14.39
18.00 18.58
21.00 21.34

NOTE! The kit includes 100m of the new flexible black 22-core DX10 antenna wire, tested to 1600W for 65 seconds key down. So you can make exactly same as I did.

Note: I have NOT (yet) tried 80m on this system. The pole might be a little too bendy, I really don’t know. If you do, use very lightweight 1mm or less wire.

This is almost the same as the regular All-Band Vertical “Classic” that created DX Commander in the first place, but the pole is only 65 cms long in it’s compact form to allow ease of travel / back-pack etc. There are many more sections to create the whole 31 feet (or so) but main section is the same physical external diameter as the “Classic” this means that eash section has a lower wall-thickness. Just beware of this. It is designed for /P opereration. If you want a permanently mounted DX Commander, you will be better off with the original “Classic”. That product is here:

As regards multi-banding this, you might want to use the three elements for:

  • 40m (and 15m)
  • 30m
  • 20m

Or maybe

  • 40m (and 15m)
  • 20m
  • 17m

or perhaps a field-day / contest variant:

  • 40m (and 15m)
  • 20m
  • 10m (as 5/8th)

The parts list includes:

  • Expedition Pole
  • Ground Plate
  • Driven Plate
  • QRO Guy Plate
  • QRO Upper Spreader
  • Stainless Nuts, bolts and washers
  • 2 x Hose clamps
  • 2 x packs Plastic carabiners
  • Circa 10m 550 Paracord
  • Some Shock-Cord
  • Appropriate amount of Glue Lined Shrink-Wrap
  • Some Fork Connectors for both Ground and Driven elements
  • 100m wire
