My new toy - the awesome SG-230 ATU

SG-230It’s only good for 150 watts or so but I’ve just loaded up top band on a half-sized G5RV at the feedpoint with this little beast. Tunes from 160m through to 10m. I run 12 volts to the loft with a spare run of RG58 (I knew that coax would come in handy!).

You can load up almost anything with this. I’ve always wondered how well the kids trampoline will transmit!

The manual talks about 150 watts being the maximum but elsewhere it discusses 200 watts. I hope that this will be the perfect little friend to my 200 watt FT1000MP Mk5 and I’ll leave my older FT1000MP to partner with the Ameritron.

  1. I’ve been using one of these at the feedpoint of my inverted L wire antenna and it works well. Its just a case of supplying it with 12v and it looks after itself. My antenna has two traps so tunes down to 160m.

If you follow SGC’s instructions, no traps are needed as it should work with random wire. However, I installed the antenna with traps long before I got the SGC so they have stayed in place.

The FT-902DM is still going strong. I finally got round to replacing the blown meter bulb.

  2. Yves, I tuned a pair of slinkey’s in a dipole configuration that stretch only 3 feet each side from top band to 10 meters. Quite an incredible piece of kit. Love the 902. Keep it up. Callum.
